Motoring Tips During a Heatwave

Summertime is upon us.  The warm weather brings potentially dangerous heatwaves, which those of us in the Central West are all too familiar with.

Keep yourself and your vehicle safe with these motoring tips:

Have an emergency kit

Keep the essentials stocked in case of an emergency.  An emergency kit isn't just handy for that spare band-aid or two when you need it, but it could potentially save your life. Some items that are suggested in an emergency kit include: owners' manual, torch and spare batteries, spare tyre, jack, tyre lever, pump and tyre gauge, first-aid kit, hi-vis safety vest. Some other recommended items include toilet paper and a blanket.

Stay hydrated, and always drive with spare water

Always bring enough water for you and your passengers. Dehydration is dangerous, and it's even more dangerous when someone is trying to operate a vehicle. Water can also be used for cleaning in and around the vehicle.  The hotter the temperature, the more water you should bring with you.

Maintain your regular car services

Regular vehicle services will check over your vehicle and ensure that it's maintained to the best of its ability.  Vehicle services include replacing filters and liquids that keep your vehicle running as it should.  If you're not confident with how something is operating on your vehicle, don't risk it.  Contact our service team today to get it checked out and keep you safe.

Monitor your fuel gauge and tyre levels, especially before big trips

Don't put yourself in a bad situation with poor tyre quality or low fuel.  Always check to ensure that you have enough fuel to get to your next desired destination, whether it be a fuel station or your final destination.

Never leave children or animals alone in the vehicle

When it's hot outside, it's even hotter in a vehicle.  Stay safe and ensure that everyone's out of the vehicle when it's off.

Park in the shade

Keep your car cooler for when you return by parking in the shade. If you're parking for an extended time, plan ahead with where the shade will be in the next few hours in order to keep your vehicle as cool as it can be.

Have your phone fully charged before your trip

Keep your phone fully charged in case of emergency, but ensure that you're not using it when you're driving.  We love listening to podcasts or music on road trips.  On the drive, keep your phone charged with a phone charging cable, or even in the charging pads available in some vehicles.

Check your air conditioner before you go

If you have concerns about your air conditioner, get it checked out! It's important to have your air filter changed regularly, especially as they can get clogged with the Dubbo dust storms.  A filter can make a world of a difference, especially if you're looking to have your air conditioner working at its best for a long trip.
